Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Where does our food come from? What are simple solutions to transform a vacant lot in an urban community into a thriving community garden? Our students must get off of the couch and into the garden.
My students are from third world countries - presently Iraq, Mexico, and El Salvador.
They are viewed as limited but with the video cameras can become agents of change as they educate the school with video clips of the garden. The students attend an elementary public school with 97% free and reduced lunch. As the garden thrives and we document the stages, the children will thrive as well. The cameras will enable us to promote community gardens throughout he city as we share what we are learning through video.
My Project
My students are English Language Learners. By capturing the garden's magic they can have visual documentation of their work and experiences. The cameras will also prepare them with 21st century literacy skills and how to navigate in a global community.
This project is important in order to increase the current standards in our schools and communities.
Community gardens have the potential to give our nation better access to healthier and happier lives. Sustainable living is imperative in the future of our communities and our children need to explore exactly what that means. Our cameras will provide a venue to share , promote, and increase the knowledge base that blooms in the garden.
