My introductory art classes are comprised of an incredible mix of students. They are a microcosm of my entire school and my community. All grades, all levels of ability—special ed. to honors students—all languages, and all backgrounds are welcome to create and explore the visual arts.
I take great pride in teaching students from one of the most diverse communities in the country.
My students are also from one of the most economically challenged areas of this country. Generational poverty and an unfamiliarity with the benefits of ongoing education are barriers my school and I are trying to remove. The spirit to learn and the eagerness of a curious mind drive my students forward. I get to help them understand their world through art and even add to it by creating something new.
In a visual arts class the ability to create, manipulate, capture and simply understand the visual image essential. Since my students are expected to visually communicate aspects of their own identities, they need tools to help them. One very important tool is a quality digital camera. One camera would help and assist over 200 students each year. A camera would be used on various projects throughout the year. Students would be able to create their own source images for self-portraits, collages, landscapes, and multi-media pieces. My state's standards require students to "develop and refine skill in the manipulation of digital imagery". Having a camera in the classroom will now make that possible. Also, students need to document their work in a digital portfolio. A quality camera will now allow for this requirement to be filled.
The camera will grant them more control over their own learning and opportunities to be creative.
Having a quality digital camera in the classroom will allow my students to function as actual artists. My students will now have professional quality images of their own work for their portfolio.
