The old adage says "A picture is worth a thousand words". During the day, my students are attempting to master the skills they need to become more effective readers and writers. However, they often need to SEE the techniques presented. This is where the Document Camera would be helpful.
Many of my students are newcomers to this country, with many having just tested out of English as a Second Language classes.
They are motivated learners, and work hard everyday to master the ELA skills they will need to achieve. The school is a middle school located in Brooklyn, NY, and provides a warm, nurturing environment in which these students can grow to their full potential. However, we do not have advanced technology in all the rooms which hinders our ability to present material to the whole group.
My Project
The Document Camera would allow me to model necessary skills for my students, making the lesson come alive for them. For example, instead of just telling them how to find the main idea of a story I could project the story onto the board and the students could help each other find it! We could put student essays up on the board to review, allowing them to learn how to edit written work. For my former ESL students, it would enable me to show them how to start a sentence to the whole group without labeling them. The possibilities are endless!
I believe the Document Camera would improve my classroom by increasing the opportunity my students have to learn from each other.
It would allow many of the basic skills to be presented in an interactive way, which would create further opportunities for my students to be active learners. Furthermore, since it would help increase their reading and writing skills, it would help them in all academic subjects.
