Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are some of the best high school students in our school and in our town. A typical day in my class is organized kayos encourage my students to work at their own pace while reflecting on their work and progress. They come in to the art room, grab their projects, supplies and quickly get to work on their art projects.
My school is an average general high school in a district with many school/educational choices, so my kids are the ones who were not chosen by the selective enrollment schools, but that does not reflect on their intellect or enthusiasm for education.
My school is overcrowded and underfunded, that is just typical of urban education in this economy. I joke with my kids all the time only the best students in the school take my classes, but that kidding is stemmed in fact. My students are hard working and want to learn as much as they can, they regularly work on projects during their lunch, before, and after school. Most of the students who come to the classroom on their free time come here to work on homework.
My Project
I am requesting 1 ELMO document camera for my students to watch demonstrations during my art class. Document cameras, like the Emo, are able to project high resolution images of whatever items are placed underneath them; this includes live demonstrations. The beauty is that the items can then be shown on a big screen in the classroom. Empowering students through art is essential and the ELMO will provide this much needed technology to our art room. The arts teach so many important lessons, beyond drawing painting and sculpture, they teach students to think creativity, observe and understand the world beyond their community and to express themselves in new ways. I watch as my students become more confident and learn how to cope with frustration and persist even challenge themselves to take chances. They learn that at times there is no right answer and that thinking creatively can help you understand many things and solve problems. My students learn best when they are shown each step necessary to complete a task. I break lessons down by projecting slides with step by step instructions and visual images. Often, in the art room, I have to demonstrate a technique using materials in real time. We spend a lot of time on theses demonstrations because of the challenge of moving three dozen people to where they can see. A tool like an ELMO will save us a lot of time during art class. Managing the students in class is a daily challenge and being able to project demonstrations, for all student to see from the comfort of their own seat will save time during instruction and allow more time for the students to be creative.
