Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
Young students are visual learners. They are inundated with imagery every day, especially at school. This is a good thing! Students use all of their senses to process the world, and one of the most essential senses for learning is sight. Every day, students use their sight to process information during their lessons. Currently, when my students are participating in group activities, they do not have a way to effectively and expeditiously share their work with the entire class at once.
I am requesting a document camera for my students to use during our Math and Literacy lessons because it is absolutely essential for my students to have the technology necessary to visually share their work.
By using a document camera, my students will not only be able to orally explain their ideas, but they will have the opportunity to show their problem solving steps. Imagine the impact on a struggling student if they were provided a visual example of a Math problem that turned out to be just the scaffold they needed to understand the content!
I want my students to be leaders in my classroom, and I believe this document camera is an incredible tool that will be used to their benefit.
