Take a moment to think about how you might use a document camera in the classroom. Can you think of a dozen ways? Two dozen? Whatever the academic subject or student demographic, there are innumerable ways to creatively use your equipment and reach your students more effectively.
34.5% of HV's student population is composed of economically disadvantaged students and English Learners.
For the past three years, over 50% of these students have scored below proficient on the CST English Language Arts test. Their vocabulary and reading levels are significantly below the average student of the same age. Most of the students are reluctant to do the number one thing that would improve both skills: practice reading. I want to take their enthusiasm for technology and integrate it with my classroom curriculum to get them excited about reading.
My Project
Interactive lessons provide a better learning experience for students. Using a document camera will allow me to build in seamless opportunities for collaboration, sharing, and other types of student involvement. This includes, but not limited to:
1. Project any item (maps, directions, examples, student work) large enough for the whole class.
2. Place a student writing sample under the document camera to model peer editing.
3. Show off student work
4. Have as student bring their work to the front of the class and model/explain how they solved a problem.
5. Project any book as a big book
6. Use highlighter tape and sticky notes to model literacy strategies with any book
7. Do an experiment as a class when you have limited supplies or limited time for cleanup.
8. Capture images of things the class is working on or things you are demonstrating.
9. Model note taking.
10. "Dissect" spelling/vocabulary words.
11. Share items that you have only 1 of.
12. Observe or classify geometric shapes.
I feel that the introduction of the Document Camera to my classroom will make the presentations of the material more pleasing and easier to understand for my students.
The document camera will allow for more student involvement (they will become more active participants in the lessons). Students will be able to explore concepts deeper with the ability to show work and generate discussions with their peers and with the instructor. The document camera will also eliminate the need for transparencies
