I am the only art teacher for all of the students in grades kindergarten through twelfth! As a teacher in a low income district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of our students receive free or reduced price lunches and many come from single parent households. Some have never even ventured outside of their own county before. When you mix these challenges with the limited access to technology and tight budgets, it can be a recipe for disaster.
Despite these challenges, I want my classroom to be a retreat for those students when the regular classroom just won't do.
While I may not be able to control their home lives, I can certainly control their experiences in my classroom. My students love to see art from around the world and I love exposing them to different mediums and cultures. I am hopeful to inspire even our youngest students to continue on a path of exploration in the arts.
In today's classroom technology, it is essential in order to reach all students' needs. In art, everything is about process and visual learning. Having a document camera in our K-6 classroom, will allow students to see details of the materials and techniques we are working on up close no matter where they are sitting in the room.
Imagine a class where students no longer have to crowd around a small table struggling to see around or over their peers.
They can see fine details and processes of art from hundreds of years ago, from across the room, in the comfort of their own seats. Students' with special needs will benefit greatly from the ability to enlarge images, making it easier for them to visualize and understand what we are working on. Students with behavioral diagnoses wont be tempted to act out being in such close quarters with their peers. Everyone will be able to use the camera to critique their classmates work. I will be able to demonstrate techniques otherwise difficult to see and understand from a distance. The uses and benefits that will come from this camera go on and on. I have been honored to have the opportunity to engage and challenge my students in different ways over my three short years at this school. However, it has come to my attention lately that they are lacking the necessary technology to really make their art journey engaging. I believe the addition of the document camera will help them grow in their knowledge of art for years to come!
