Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all Newcomers and have just begun their second year of American education in East Oakland. They have come from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico, many are refugees fleeing government corruption. All are here seeking a better life. Even though they are in a low income / high poverty, high crime area of the US, they are still so hopeful, and I believe in everything they are capable of. They have such a desire to better themselves and learn the English language so they can be successful. They are so resilient and inspiring, and I strive to make a classroom that they feel comfortable in and can able to grow in. They are curious and I want to offer them as many tools as I can to succeed.
My Project
Having a document camera in my classroom will allow me to show students how to implement reading strategies on classwork. As classrooms are gravitating towards more electronic usages, A document camera is the cheapest effective way to mimic what can be done using a smart board. In the past when I have used this tool, it makes it much easier for students to follow along and they are more focused.
Many of my students have had interruptions in their education, so basic instruction is very difficult for them to follow.
This tool will allow me to demonstrate how to fill out worksheets or start the projects we are working on in class. Having a document camera that is compatible with my chromebook will allow me to seamlessly transition from the doc cam to slide presentation, to video clips, and any other media I use in the classroom.
