Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from poor areas and often arrive at high school without the knowledge of what it truly means to buckle down and be a student. As a freshman English teacher, I am given the opportunity to mold my kids into learning machines who, by the end of the year, will learn on their own!

My students come from all kinds of backgrounds and, while sometimes squirrels, are passionate adolescents.

Our school takes pride in instilling not only academic knowledge, but the knowledge of what it means to be their own personal best in society. While most of our students have free or reduced lunch, our kids' own personal battles rarely stand in the way of their desires to find a better life for themselves. I have often sat them down, one at a time, and asked them what they want to do when they get out of high school. Very few answer with the words "I don't know." They are driven and motivated and inspire me daily to be the best teacher that I can be so that my students will have the best education I can give them.

My Project

As an English teacher, I often work with articles, short stories, poems, documents, and books. We teach our students how to "close read" and really pick the information apart so as to better understand the intricate parts. We teach a process called "Attacking the Text," which means the students must number paragraphs, write short sentence summaries of each paragraph, look for specific items such as figurative language or rhetorical devices, and annotate and highlight. A document camera would help us in that I would be able to show my students, in real time, the thought process behind how to pick apart the text. While I often tell them how to do things verbally, many students require a visual component to truly understand and digest the process. A document camera would greatly impact the effects of going through the materials with them.

By donating to this project, you will make my students have an even more clear picture as to what they need to do to digest the reading materials in front of them.

Often, in teaching, we pursue clarity in our directions above all. However, sometimes clarity is incredibly difficult to reach with complex instructions. By donating to this project, you will help me to help the students understand materials more clearly and help the students think for themselves when reading.
