Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Within my 5th grade classroom I strive to create a cooperative learning environment full of shared learning experiences, and opportunities for students to be the creative thinkers.
My students are from a low socioeconomic area of the city, but come with an enthusiastic joy for experiencing new learning and sharing their ideas.
Many children each year come with deficits from poor eyesight to language acquisition difficulties. My district tries to involve support programs like mobile dentistry, as much as possible to get students the care they need, but many students in my class each year still need eye wear that parents cannot afford. At a prior school, one student that I had for 5th and 6th grades had learned to stop even looking at the board and listened only while he drew pictures at his desk. When I figured out he could not see even by sitting right in front of the board, I placed him at a computer that had a document camera feed through as it projected and he could see and began to actively participate. Kids had always thought he was odd, but then saw him as the brilliant boy he had always been.
My Project
I have taken on a new classroom in a school that has no classroom technology, but projectors are coming this month. I would like to accelerate and heighten the learning of these students using this document camera. I plan to use it to make all materials, models, demonstrations and book illustrations visually accessible to each student. I will use it to allow students to share their math strategies, stories, thinking, artwork and much more with all students in the class. I plan to purchase the microscope accessories myself to bring science to life for all the students since we have such limited resources. My first goal though will be to motivate and engage students in sharing math task strategies in a safe, fun sharing environment to foster risk taking that leads to deeper math concept learning.
I truly believe all children are capable of success, no exceptions, and it is my job to make learning accessible, engaging and motivating.
This document camera will help me do just that! Helping these kids reach their goals and dreams is a win win for the community and society as a whole.
