My students need to engage in STEAM activities with their families to extend learning beyond the classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach Kindergarten in an inner city school. Each morning my children come to school with smiles on their faces and eagerness to learn. My classroom is a safe base for kids; many of my students have witnessed violence, come to school hungry, or seeking attention they may not receive at home because of the work schedule of parents.
As an integral part of my plan to incorporate more STEAM activities into my curriculum, I would like to engage the students’ families through the use of STEAM challenges.
Children are naturally curious about their world. Parents and other caregivers can foster a child’s interests by providing a safe environment for him or her to explore, ask questions, and take risks to enhance learning. However, not all families will feel comfortable discussing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) topics with their children. The resources I have requested will guide families on this journey. The STEM Family Engagement Idea Cards will guide families through an activity and possible discussion questions to encourage students to keep their sense of wonder about the world. All necessary materials will be provided for the family. The Botley The Coding Robot & Action Challenge Accessory Pack will be used for lessons in the classroom. As my students become more comfortable with coding, they will have the opportunity to present their Botley coding successes to their families during conferences and Family STEAM Nights.
