My students are adjudicated adolescents in a residential facility.
There are many factors in everyone's life that can lead to bad decision making.
In most ways our students aren't any different than any other kids, they just made bad choices. They are here to get the help they need in learning why those choices were not appropriate and how they can avoid repeating them. For various reasons, our students are not able to attend public school and are educated on-grounds. We are a school of 35-45 students and we do our best to keep their education on track with other students of their age and grade level.
Many of my students have been in foster care, some have experienced neglect in their home lives and, quite often, arrive at this facility with the clothes they're wearing and very little else.

It should be no surprise to anyone that teens often have a difficult time getting started in the morning and many will skip breakfast because they're too tired to think about food. Later in the morning when the stomach rumbling begins, there is nowhere for them to get healthy food and that is the reason for Second Chance Breakfast.
A simple 4oz fruit cup or applesauce at 10 o'clock can change a teen's morning, enabling them to be more alert and better able to handle the academic tasks that await them.
Having an opportunity to participate in a healthy snack routine may teach a teen the importance of developing healthy Hobbits...er...habits.
