My preschool students are energetic, curious, tender-hearted 4 and 5-year-olds that thrive on learning. They are part of a state-run program called The Great Start Readiness Program that helps children who are considered high risk. Our district also now requires free and reduced breakfast and lunch for all elementary students because of the local median income. While helping them overcome, we find ways to help prepare them for kindergarten and help them develop a love for learning that will grow throughout their academic career.
Walk into our classroom and you will hear music, laughter, and conversations that will fill your heart with joy.
You may also get a bit messy because hands on learning is our thing! We focus on developing literacy, mathematical, and social skills through supported play. In order to maintain an academically rich environment, we have to provide the students with materials that they can explore and manipulate to practice higher thinking skills.
My Project
The dramatic play center is our most popular area of our classroom. Kids love to dress up, pretend to cook food, and reenact real life scenarios. Dramatic play can help children develop social, cognitive, and performing skills that help them throughout their educational career.
The kitchen furniture that we currently have is very old and we have had to remove most of it from our classroom.
Our refrigerator tipped over on a student so we had to put it away. Some of the other pieces of furniture have knobs that are broken and screws sticking out. We have also removed those pieces from our classroom. Currently we are using a small sink in our dramatic play area, but that is all that we have.
This all-in-one kitchen will give our students the opportunity to play and pretend in new ways. Since the kitchen is all-in-one it will also help us save space in our classroom. With more room, we can add other materials to the dramatic play center that will help encourage more enriched play. This project will impact not only the students that we have this year, but the students we will have for many years to come.
