Help me give my students digital microscopes so they can 'see what I see' and my team and I can effectively teach our science units socially distanced in the classroom and remotely via Zoom.
4th grade is a unique period for children as they have learned the basics and are now ready to expand their knowledge. My students are inquisitive, curious, and still "wowed" by the world around them. I love to see their "a-ha" moments during our environmental and physical science units!
My Project
My fellow 4th grade teachers and I will use the microscopes in our classrooms to easily share specimen images with our students enabling an entire remote and/or an in-person socially distanced classroom to share in the moment of wonderment and discovery of the microscopic world in real time. The microscopes can be used in all classroom scenarios: full remote classroom, hybrid of in-person and remote, and full in-person environments. The students will use the microscopes not only in our environmental education unit to take a closer look at prairie plants and their leaves, roots, etc. They will also use the microscopes during our unit on the human body, germs and more. We will study fingerprints and hair samples as well as pet hair and nails. The microscopes will allow us to adapt our existing curriculum and create remote and socially distant learning experiences that inspire curiosity and keep our students interested and actively engaged. This will enable us to keep our lessons hands-on, student-centered, and three dimensional as we redefine our strategies to achieve learning outcomes.
The digital microscopes will help us to create a remote classroom and a safe socially distanced in-person classroom that is interactive, collaborative, and engaging while promoting critical thinking.
We can involve the whole class, a small group, or individual students.
This advanced technology will benefit the students in all instructional scenarios and will remain beneficial as we project what we see through the microscope to the whole class. These microscopes will prepare our students for the future of science by giving them experience with this technology.
