Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming"! That's my students' favorite quote for a reason! It resonates with them, it gives them motivation and power! You see, the majority of my students are second language learners coming from a socio-economically disadvantaged demographic. At our school 86% of our students identify as Hispanic. 83% get free or reduced lunch. Despite the odds stacked against them, the students I have are some of the kindest, hardest working children in our valley. They keep swimming! My goal is to give them everything I can to not only keep them afloat, but propel them forward!
My Project
Our school is in the process of transitioning to become the first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) school in our area. That means all subjects will be taught with focus surrounding STEAM. Because, our students LOVE science, we believe we can raise their ability in reading, writing, and math by using art, investigations and experiments to engage them. My students thrive on color and adventure. Using water color paints to create art will add an element of excitement to all subject areas I teach. It will also make a huge impact on my students’ lives and learning. I envision my students creating beautiful painted butterflies as we study the unique Monarch migrating phenomenon. I imagine detailed Pysanky Eggs using wax resist techniques after reading Patricia Polacco’s, “Rechenka’s Eggs”. Art experiences will help cement these types of academic lessons into my students’ brains because they are engaging!
