Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My ESL (English as a Second Language) Classroom is located in a school that serves the most economically challenged neighborhood in our state.
My students include refugees, recent immigrants and US born non-native speakers Grades K-6.
All of them are categorized at poverty level. The challenges they face are immense but their determination to succeed here in the US far surpasses their limitations. What they need is help and resources to get them there. Because of their Non-English speaking status, my students face the dual challenge of keeping up with their peers in a rigorous academic environment while simultaneously acquiring a brand new language. Research shows that language development is accelerated when students have multi-modal learning opportunities throughout their day. This means hearing, listening, seeing and doing. I rely on technology to help me bring the world from the outside into my classroom but I need your help.
My Project
My English Learners acquire language best when they are fully submersed and engaged in each lesson. Having a projector would help them see things a whole new way.
Imagine what it would be like to be a in a school where most of the students & teachers speak a different language than you do - where most everything is foreign to you.
Help me bring the World into my classroom - a projector and document camera will allow my students to deepen and share their learning experiences. Education research shows students acquire language when the curriculum is made comprehensible for them. My classroom would truly be a better place if I could help my students access challenging curriculum with the use of a projector.
Each school day I teach seventy English Language Learners (yes, 90!) in a culturally sensitive laboratory style classroom. My students visit me in groups for approximately 1-2 hours per day. Our learning time together is very rigorous - we have a lot of work to do with very little time and resources available. I am requesting a projector and document camera to help me enhance the learning environment in my classroom so that I can help them catch up to their native English speaking peers as quickly as possible
