This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Do you remember when you were in Kindergarten? Do you remember the most popular corner in the whole room...the block corner! I remember spending hours building with blocks, making towers, castles, and car ramps.
I currently teach at Paul Revere Elementary School in Chicago. Over 90% of students receive free and reduced lunches. With the limited funding available, my students do not have any block to build with during math explorations.
Many studies show that building with blocks during the early childhood phase of a student's life introduces them to the ideas of spatial reasoning, geometry, area, volume and measurement. With an introduction at such an early age, these students are sure to excel in later years. This can lead to a future in science, architecture or construction. My students would benefit from this daily activity.
