"Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand." This quote applies to my 9th grade world geography class because unless they are able to "do", "feel", and "act"; information goes in one ear and out the other. These maps would allow students to experience geography hands-on.
Many of my students are receiving free or reduced price lunches.
They come from high poverty and while they are eager to learn we are severely lacking in basic and current supplies, specifically maps. Most computers are slower than molasses and more trouble to use than not use. Preparing them to be leaders of the future requires us to introduce them to and let them feel comfortable with geography. These maps would allow that interaction and hands-on opportunity.
My Project
These pull-down maps include a political map of the United States and one of the world. They are clear, concise and laminated so that they can be written on and then erased. That last part is also the best part because I can show or students can illustrate different parts of the maps for different reasons. They are pull-down maps which allows them to be used when needed and then put away when not which in a small classroom is crucial!
Please help my students become more knowledgeable about the world around them.
Most students are unable to explain and give directions from their home to school let alone think about the big world around them. These maps would allow them to have hands-on practice of world geography. They would at least have a chance to be knowledgeable about the fact that there are other countries and even continents in the world. We expect them to be the future leaders of this world, let's give them a chance!
