Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Everyone knows that Mrs. Granger, the language arts teacher, has X-ray vision, and nobody gets away with anything in her classroom. To make matters worse, she's also a fanatic about the dictionary, which is hopelessly boring to Nick. But when Nick learns an interesting tidbit about words and where they come from, it inspires his greatest plan yet: to invent a new word. From now on, a pen is no longer a pen -- it's a frindle."
At John A. Walsh Elementary School, we serve approximately 550 students per year that are 94% Hispanic, 4% Black, and 2% White. Ninety-three percent (93%) of the students come from low-income families, and about 22% are Limited English proficient. With this population, students are always facing new words, in English and Spanish.
It is my hope to obtain a class set of Frindle to read aloud with my students in the fourth grade. I try to encourage a love of reading among my students. Reading independently, reading with a partner, and reading aloud are all means I employ when sharing a novel with my students. Read aloud time is set aside everyday, and students follow along as a story is read to them. I've found that they enjoy listening, and it is a good model of fluency for them. So far, I have had great success with my students, and I see an appreciation for literature growing within them.
Frindle is a fascinating story that will capture and increase my students' interest in words, their meaning, and origins.
Thank you!
