Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are incredibly resilient learners. I never imagined back in March would be the last time I saw them. Many are faced with the issue with limited amounts of access to internet and technology, making it difficult for remote learning.
However, they are incredibly enthusiastic and eager learners, who would benefit from resources that could help increase their success in our new established distance learning platform.
Being the hard workers they are they have shown incredible growth and dedication despite the challenges they are facing during this time. I see some students four times a week (those who do have access to internet), and talk on the phone and/or text message the rest who cannot attend our live sessions and I am humbled and amazed by the willingness of my students to try new things and continue our routine outside of the classroom.
My Project
Read aloud stories are old fashioned and loved by everyone. My students love having books read to them, especially when we they are able to hear a variety of voices that go along with the characters in the stories. Read aloud books, and specifically audio books are a great resource for English Language Learners. It helps with fluency, pronunciation of words, growing vocabulary and increasing their English comprehension.
Audio books can change the way student's listen, imagine, read and learn, and my English Language Learners will benefit immensely from this donation.
There are so many ways to read, and that is the beauty with literacy. There is no right way a student can access a book, specifically during this time, many of my students cannot go to the library and they have access to a limited amount of books at home. They rely on me reading books to them during our live sessions, and any videos I can find on YouTube.
The joy of audio books is that every student has the opportunity to listen to a different story teller each time. Being able to read a physical book and listening to an audio book lead to the same designation, each of those reading experiences create an event or memory for them. The best outcome of an audio book is that each student will be experiencing a book entirely differently from one another. They will be engaged with the variety of texts that are presented to them, and they will not only be listening to the story but following along the words in the book. This will be helpful for them in order to retain the English language better and create a greater love to different ways of reading.
