Do You Have Any More Graphic Novels I Can Read?

My students need graphic novels to grow as lifelong readers.

My Students

I got used to hearing students say," I hate reading." I tried to find books that would spark my students' interest in reading but unfortunately for struggling readers, books filled with just text, made my students discouraged instead of excited to read. Graphic novels get my students excited to read.

I teach Special Education and I have many students who struggle with reading because they have difficulty with decoding, fluency, and/or comprehension.

These struggles have made my students hate reading. My students wouldn't choose to read and asking them to read to help improve their reading skills was like pulling teeth. I chose book after book to try and find text that would spark an interest in reading. My students would look at books and all the text that filled a page and automatically before they started reading feel discouraged. I had one of those teacher's moments that feel your heart with joy the moment I had a student who never finished a book ask me if I had anymore graphic novels he could read. This one student shared his interest in reading graphic novels with some of my other students, and now I have many students who struggle with reading, reading for pleasure. As you can imagine I want to foster this spark of love for reading, which is why I need more graphic novels.

My Project

My students will use graphic novels to explore topics they are curious about, inquire about topics we are discussing, and develop reading skills to improve their ability to read and comprehend text. These books will be used for students to check out and read independently for pleasure but will also be used for small group and individual instruction. The options for using these books in writing and reading are endless. I have chosen graphic novels that will both challenge and foster a love for reading.

This project for a variety of graphic novels at different levels and of different topics, will help my students continue to grow as lifelong readers.

I want to have reading groups and have discussions with graphic novels. Teaching students skills in reading is possible when teaching students using books of interest. Help me make this spark of interest in reading a flame that will burn for the rest of my students' lives.
