My students include all 340 students who attend our school. Our students have been raised in a culture of poverty where drugs and alcohol are a pervasive problem. I work with every student through school initiatives and one way is through our kindness program and through drug prevention.
I work with all the students at a K-6th Title I school through weekly classroom lessons and multiple assemblies that I conduct.
I also work with 85 students weekly in my office. My school is multicultural, and most students at our school receive free breakfast, snack, and lunch daily. On the weekends we send meals home for the weekend. Many of my students are homeless or in foster care. A lot of the students that I work with have experienced trauma, loss, and hardship. I work very hard to help them achieve emotional, social, and mental well being through various curricula that I utilize.
My Project
I am constantly bombarded by requests for teaching resources or to work with students with very specific issues or needs. Frequently, I will get requests for books or resources to help teachers, aides, or specialists deal with specific problems. I also am frequently asked to do character lessons on topics.
These resources will meet the unique needs of our students and empower either myself or teachers to meet these issues with engaging and effective children's literature.
These are resources that I have had to borrow from other schools or libraries, but are then not capable of being delivered to meet the student or classroom needs in a timely manner.
There are so many challenges facing our children, and the specificity of these needs can sometimes be overwhelming. Resources like these materials can make a huge difference in reaching children and enabling them to achieve their full potential.
