My students need these lab kits to conduct exciting chemistry experiments, while learning the scientific method and state standards in chemistry.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember how excited you were when you found out that you could mix chemicals in the science lab and maybe blow something up? To open the world of chemistry, I need fun, standards based, lab activities that will engage each student and inspire them to become America's future scientists.
The school I teach for is a middle school (grades 6-8) located in the inner city.
About 98% of the student population come from low socioeconomic homes. They also come with limited English speaking skills. Because of low standardized test scores in math and language arts, all elective classes have been removed from the curriculum. In the place of electives, students have been given multiple language arts/reading classes, as well as math classes, in hopes of bringing up their test scores.
The brightest part of each students' day is science class. They come in all energized in anticipation of doing some type of lab activity. These students learn best when they see that the instruction will enable them to do lab activities. Consequently, I am always looking for standards based labs to enrich their learning experience.
My Project
The three lab activity kits I have selected are designed to help students apply the scientific method while at the same time teaching chemistry standards. It is my desire to so inspire my students with these labs that they will aspire to become scientists and engineers.
These lab activities will be done in a science project format. At our school, the students traditionally are not given the opportunity to do science projects. Typically science projects require parental support and supplies at home that these students do not have access to. I want my students to be enriched by the science project experience, as many of their fellow peers in more affluent neighborhoods get to experience.
My students will follow the six step scientific method, including statement of problem, conducting research online, creating a hypothesis, design the experiment, collect data, analyze graphs, and draw appropriate conclusions. They will then create a project display board for presentation.
These lab activities will motivate my students to be more curious about the world around them.
It will train them to be problem solvers. These activity kits will so enrich their learning experience that some will consider becoming scientists, engineers, and doctors. With guidance, these types of activities can open career opportunities to these kids that they may have never dreamed could be attainable.
