Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of a very large, urban school district with a very diverse student population. Our school is a dual language Spanish Immersion magnet, in which all students in the school receive half of their instruction in English and half of their instruction in Spanish.
By the time they become sixth graders, nearly all of the students are bilingual.
Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment.
Our school serves ESL and Special Education students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
My Project
My students are coming up on our poetry unit of study in our classroom. I need additional copies of "Locomotion" as my class size has increased and our class set is limited. Students will read "Locomotion" to learn free verse, figurative language, themes, character analysis, author's craft, and authors viewpoint to better improve their own reading comprehension and skills.
Poetry is a challenging genre to teach to my 5th graders.
"Locomotion" will enable my students to become more interested in poetry while gaining a deeper understanding of literary devices. In this unit, my students will use the novel "Locomotion" to help teach and write their own poetry.
By using literature to teach, students are more engaged and excited to delve deeper into the curriculum.
