Our school serves students whose parents are in the military. We have two Navy facilities on our peninsula and a Marine Base as well. Currently, we have twenty-seven, military families.
My students come from a diverse social economic background and have learning disabilities.
I've had some who have been homeless to some whose parents have to work two jobs to make ends meet. Our entire school has free lunch and free breakfast. My students struggle to achieve academically and maybe, even feel bad about themselves and their learning.
They want to learn but sometimes have trouble paying attention. Others have autism and have trouble sitting in a seat for an hour. My students are excited to be in my class because they know how much I care about them and how much I know they can learn in my classroom.
My students just need some extra help to achieve and learn how to learn. Their parents are great overall, doing their best to raise them. But it is hard to work all day at physically demanding jobs and then have the energy and patience to deal with a highly demanding child. I want to do a good job.
My Project
Many of my students have trouble with reading. These difficulties continue when they are writing. When a student has trouble reading, it can be considered dyslexia and can impact their education.
Smartpens can record notes with a minimal of writing so my students can focus on listening and processing information.
I will allow students to use each type of pen and then evaluate which one works best for them.
From this data, we will produce a chart to share with others and perhaps be included in the California Dyslexia Guidelines. The information will be shared with parents so our students can be better prepared to go to middle school and take good notes.
