Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are resilient. They had their kindergarten year disrupted due to the shut down for Covid-19, but they kept showing up and learning. The diversity of the class (ethnic, social economic status, and special needs) enriches our learning environment!

My Project

My students come from varying backgrounds and ethnicities, yet my reading material does not reflect them. Children need to see themselves in books so that they can relate to the characters and be inspired.

Reading books with diverse protagonists cannot be limited to a special month of the year.

Black History Month is usually the only time I have books with diverse people in them. I have slowly been adding to my collection but my student's deserve to see themselves all year long now, not just for special occasions.

My first graders are emergent readers so they also need books they can read themselves. These books I can send home so that the children can read with their families.
