My students need 7 KNex DNA Replication and Transcription sets to understand how DNA is the genetic code that is able to be transformed into RNA and proteins that make up all living things.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Building is better! My students are more actively engaged in learning when they are able to tangibly manipulate objects and make sense of abstract science concepts.
Over 50% of my students are English Learners and over 90% of them receive free/reduced price meals at school.
Due to many of their low socioeconomic statuses, many of my students have never left their neighborhoods or experienced the world outside of their school and homes. Additionally, most of our English Learners have had very little experience in science due to the requirements for them to take more English and Math courses, which gives them no space in their schedule to take science. For that reason, when the wonders of science concepts, lab experiments and modeling of processes are introduced to them, my students are very engaged through these hands on experiences.
My Project
These DNA kits will allow my students, who are generally weak in their English reading and writing skills, to understand the structure of DNA, how DNA replicates and how it is transcribed into RNA and eventually translated into the proteins that are needed for life. My students will be able to note the base-pairing rules of DNA and create their own DNA models. What is explained and diagrammed in their 2-D textbooks will be brought to life as they put together the nucleotides and create the 3-D double helix that is the basis for life.
Your support will engage my students in learning the central dogma of biology.
They will be able to go beyond their textbooks and worksheets and create a memorable experience in the learning of DNA.
