My Students

My students come from a wide variety of ethnic, national and socio/economic backgrounds. They generally have some idea of a career goal in mind, but many, because of lack of good role models, don't know how or what to do to reach those goals.

My Project

DNA barcoding is a current research method that will give students an opportunity to apply the concepts they are learning. With the requested DNA Barcoding Amplification Kits, students will bring in their own samples and then do genetic research on them which will be used in a national database to be used by scientists around the world. They will actually get to contribute to current research being done around the world to document and understand the current flora and fauna before they disappear. These experiences are expensive and cannot be funded with regular education funding. Participating in real science will both motivate and prepare students for careers in STEM fields.
