Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are amazing and creative and deserve to have art at the middle school. Currently we do not offer an art program or even one art class at our middle school. Students look forward to having a creative outlet at school and in developing their skills in the visual arts.
For the last two years, Mrs. Burns and myself, have co-advised an after-school art club for students interested in the visual arts.
Every year, we get in excess of 50 - 60 students who sign up and are interested. Approximately 30-35 students stick with it throughout the year. We are looking to expand our club by providing more variety and interesting projects for our students. Currently, our club is not funded by anyone other than Mrs. Burns and myself. We would like to expand both the types of art we are capable of producing with our students and expose them to a wide variety of mediums.
My Project
Currently myself ( Paula Snyder) and another teacher (Carolyn Burns) have been providing a visual art club at DMS for the last 2 years after school. We absolutely love our club, but have been supplying our students with the tools needed to explore the arts ourselves. Due to our limited funding and growing club, we are attempting to expand projects, mediums, and outreach to more students. We are excited to show them more painting (especially with paper that doesn't bleed through or rip), how to use pastels and further their drawing skills.
This was our first year where we had students participate in an art show as part of their yearly talent show.
With over 60 entries, our art club students received school wide recognition and support for their artistic endeavors. One of our students was even a winner!
It is our hope that providing students with proper art supplies, room, and opportunities to explore the visual arts, that they will become life-long learners in the arts, and allow them a means of self expression.
We appreciate you considering donating to our students at DMS for items like paint, palettes and oil pastels.
