I have the privilege to work with truly amazing young people. My students are from a very rural community suffering from generational poverty. Many of them have already overcome huge obstacles in their young lives. These students amaze me everyday with their talent. They are incredible musicians. We don't have much to work with, but we do our best. Most all of our music is performed a cappella due to the fact that we don't have access to instruments other than a digital piano.
My Project
Having these instruments will allow our students the ability to have an authentic cultural performance. Anyone can purchase a track to sing along with. You don't truly understand the meaning of the percussion parts in a cultural song unless you are able to experience it live. Playing the djembe live while singing a traditional African piece allows everyone the opportunity of understanding why and how these traditional songs were used in villages. It also allows the students performing the opportunity to perform the music the way the composer/arranger intended it to be performed. All of my students are looking forward to learning to play the "call" rhythms and more while performing some great choral works of music.
