A typical day in my classroom is anything but typical! On some days students might be learning Ballet or Jazz, while on another they are exploring Hula, African or Swing. Students can be found choreographing their own work, or writing dance criticism about a famous piece. Every day is amazing!
My students come from all different types of economical and cultural backgrounds.
Because we are a charter school, students come from very diverse locations, with some students commuting from very rural areas and some coming from the large city close to us. Our school is the only one in our area with an extensive fine arts program, and I am proud to be a part of a school community that supports the arts so passionately. This is the sixth year of our growing dance program!
My Project
Students will get to learn West African dance and drumming within a large unit that also teaches them about Malian culture and the Malian legend of Sundiata, the original Lion King story. The unit culminates in a student choreography project in which the Sundiata legend is expressed through movement (much like many African cultures do to pass down their histories). The students will also use what they've learned about African drumming to create their own accompaniment for their choreography. These dances will be presented on stage for a large audience.
In addition, these drums will be used on a weekly basis to provide live accompaniment for Modern and Contemporary classwork.
Learning to embrace diversity is a lesson that goes far beyond grade school.
The experience of live, authentic drumming will not only allow students to be in the moment with the content, but it will get them excited about it! Previously, we have watched videos and listened to CDs; live drumming will bring the spirit of African dance into the classroom!
