This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a diverse middle school. Our school has around seven hundred students with ninety-one percent getting free or reduced lunch prices, approximately twenty-one percent non-native English speakers and eighty-six percent minorities of various backgrounds. Our school provides students with an encouraging learning environment and prepares students to be successful in high school and beyond. We are always striving to find ways to better prepare and encourage our students and also develop an interest and love for the field of mathematics. Access and equity are key for student success and we want to be able to provide the tools that our students need to fully engage and make connections in the classroom.

My Project

Help me create an authentic learning opportunity for my students to investigate surface area, volume, scale factor, and 3D figures!! The COVID 19 pandemic has created significant challenges for our community, and our students have struggled to maintain adequate learning progress.

We want to incorporate project-based learning strategies to increase student engagement, ownership over their learning, and excitement about learning mathematics.

This project uses a project-based learning (PBL) framework to drive instruction. Throughout this PBL unit, students will design and build full size, three-dimensional inflatable yard decorations, motivating their investigation of surface area, volume, scale factor, and nets pf 3D figures. This project culminates in a public display of learning where students will showcase their inflatables to their school community.
