Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are some of the hardest working learners you will ever meet! We are in a dual-language program which means our students actively learn and produce work in both English and Spanish! It is incredible to watch their beautiful minds develop and grow. They are becoming more creative with their thinking, problem solving, and skills across contents. They set goals for themselves as the consistently reflect on their work academically and behaviorally, and are encouraged to advocate for support and to celebrate the success of everyone.

Different backgrounds, varied interests, unpredictable home lives, and staggered educational performance levels, requires our classroom to be flexible in their approach to learning and problem solving.

Our class is part of the nation's first ever Nest dual-language program which educates students in both English and Spanish, while also supporting the unique needs of several students who are on the Autism Spectrum. The Nest Program is an inclusive setting which allows both students on the spectrum to authentically interact and engage with neuro-typical students; which is an invaluable learning experience for all. Our classroom also provides unwavering support for other students with learning challenges and students who developing their English language skills.

My Project

As a teacher of young people, I spend time furthering my own understanding of new and exciting ways to engage the students in meaningful practices. Graphic Novels have become the fan-favorites in my classroom library. I saw this as an opportunity to learn more about the genre of writing. I attended PDs and feel ready to engage my students in some more exploration with this genre as they go through the writing process to create their very own graphic novels!

This project will support out work in engaging young writers in opportunities to practice, rehears, and refine their creativity.

The graphic novels and companion books will be used as mentor text and supports throughout this new and rather unfamiliar writing work. Furthermore, the classroom materials such and post-its and paper are essential for the drafting process as there is a lot of drafting and revising. The colorful markers and project covers will allows our young writers to publish their stories to share with others. Look out for another upcoming project that will be filled with graphic novels to add to our classroom library!
