Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban public school with over 900 students. The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. There are over 15 different languages spoken in the homes of our students including Spanish, Portuguese, Khmer, and Vietnamese. Over 60% of our students’ homes do not speak English as their primary language and 25% of our student population receives ESL services.
Our middle school is classified as a Title I school and over 70% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch.
Our school is part of the District Reference Group "H," which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in. Despite these economic barriers, our students strive for academic achievement. Our school community promotes our unique diversity and encourages students to reach their maximum learning potential.
My Project
Throughout the year our cluster has been fortunate enough to receive funding for classroom Chromebooks which we use on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we do not have a safe and secure place to store these Chromebooks and to allow them to charge overnight. A 20-Bay charging station is very expensive, but also necessary to keep our Chromebooks secure. Instead of spending a lot of money on an expensive cart, we thought it would be a great learning experience to build our own carts with our students!
The requested supplies will be used to create and build two Chromebook charging stations to use in our cluster.
Our goal will be to have a group of students stay after school (or during our Team Enrichment time) to help design and build these charging carts. We already have two metal cabinets that we will be using to create the charging stations. The surge protectors and dividers will be attached to the metal cabinets via the requested zip ties and a few supplies from home. Once completed, we will have built two charging stations to safely secure and charge up to 40 Chromebooks. This will be a great learning experience for our students!
