Just 9 months ago, 21 intelligent, kind, and loving first graders walked into our classroom for the very first time. Each one of them is unique, coming from a variety of family structures, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
I believe that they are capable of changing our world for the better, but we must first equip them with the skills they need in order to make a difference.
Being located so close to a military base, our school serves many military families, and this adds to the very diverse classroom environment. Among them, they have a variety of learning goals, needs, and aspirations. It is my goal, as their teacher, to meet each and every one of them where they are and help them get to where they want to go.
My Project
Each day, my students rotate to five different literacy focused centers, one of which is small group reading. During this time a group of students who read at similar levels work with me and their group members to grow as readers. We do this by building our vocabulary, reading a variety of books, and asking questions about what we read.
Research shows that small group instruction is key to a student's success!
Small group instruction is where individual needs are met and where targeted goals are set. My students and I thoroughly enjoy this time and have seen the benefits of it in our classroom, but we are in need of more books to read together. These books are high-interest titles for young readers and will only grow their love of reading!
