My school is racially, ethnically and economically diverse. Our model of teaching is connected with EL Education (Expeditionary Learning). This means that staff within grade level teams and across the grades create Learning Expeditions that integrate content from different courses. We often have students collaborate across grade levels as well.
Many of my students are first or second generation immigrants from around the world.
This is why developing 21st century skills is so important to my students' future success. Having this experience and expertise will equip them for the world of college, career and citizenship.
My Project
The teachers at our school are regularly seeking ways for our students to participate in fieldwork and to engage with experts. Having access to AR/VR would allow Humanties teachers to utilize Google Expeditions. This would allow for students to experience historic sites and documents. We can also use AR & VR as a way to have students demonstrate their learning while at the same time expanding their technology skills.
I am currently working with the Senior Humanities teachers to create a virtual museum of their Activist Art project at the end of their fall expedition.
This year students will create original art that is in response to the US involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This virtual museum will then be made web accessible to the humanities students grades 9-11. I am also working with one of the Math teachers to create a project where students create virtual escape rooms.
In my Engineering classes I will teach the skills of 3D design as it relates to Augmented and Virtual Reality. This will provide a cadre of students who can aid students and teachers across the school in using these innovative technologies in the classroom.
