Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are at-risk. This means they are at risk of not graduating. Some of my students are pregnant, teen parents, on probation, from group homes, behind in credits, second language learners, struggling with drug addiction, or simply just have not made a connection with their traditional high school. I work in a Model Continuation Title I high school. The student-to-teacher ratio is 20:1. Our students have the opportunity to make up their credits by attending our local community college, completing additional coursework at our school, enrolling in ROP, and taking additional classes online. Our entire school population receives free lunch.
The majority of our students were placed here involuntarily.
Many of our students do not have computers at home, nor do they have internet access. Our students benefit from smaller class sizes. We are a devoted staff to our students' success.
My Project
I teach Social Studies and my esteemed colleague teaches English. We want to pair up and tackle inequality and social injustice. We have selected the following novels to be read in "book clubs" in English class. These titles include: The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives, All American Boys, The Hate U Give, and On the Come Up. These novels are engaging and will allow students to empathize with their teenage protagonists on the hot topics of racism, injustice, poverty, and the laws today. We want much more from our students!
How can students become social justice, human and civil rights advocates?
How can our students be leaders and stand up for what is right? What are the rights of Americans? How can students be more involved? In my social studies classes, we will learn how we can have a voice! Students will be in learning centers. One center will be an online activity where students choose an injustice that they would like to make a difference. They will choose their cause! In another teacher led center, students will also be introduced to local activism such as Amnesty International, Tolerance.org, and there are a plethora of actionable ideas on Social Injustice on Nea.org.
Students will design their platform to convince other students:
What is the injustice?
How many people is this affecting?
What are the consequences of this injustice?
What are legal action plans on how we can combat this injustice?
Students may create a video out in the community. They may interview people that are fighting the fight. They may try to persuade us to join Amnesty International by demonstrating that one voice joined with others can result in change. Students will stand up, choose a side & be advocates.
