Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach STEAM electives to middle schoolers in an under-resourced and underfunded school which also boasts a free and/or reduced-price lunch participation of 100%.
My students are amazingly diverse, hard-working, and enthusiastic about learning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
These kids have many obstacles that they face in their daily lives, but once they enter my class, they are spirited, driven, and ready to wow me with their curiosity and ingenuity. They constantly impress me with their creativity and talents!
My Project
Last winter, I took a professional development course in Providence, RI called the Infosys Pathfinders Winter Institute and learned about the world of Chibitronics and paper circuits. It was a fantastic training and my group and I made a light up rollercoaster theme park. I was able to network with other teachers across the nation and was able to implement the curriculum that I learned from the training before the pandemic forced our school to close earlier this year.
This winter session, the coordinators are offering the course again, this time in a virtual format but also offering an accelerated version, where I will get to focus more on the programming aspects of their chibi-chip since I'm already well versed in creating the different circuits with the copper tape.
I am hoping to add motors and sensors along with the crafting element in my STEAM elective classes.
