My Students

My third-grade students are diverse, dynamic, eager and bright English language learners. They enjoy learning through hands-on activities and sharing new knowledge with each other. When they learn something new, they beam with pride and demonstrate it through their reading, writing, and speaking. Classroom lessons often depend on background knowledge for students to connect to new learning. This becomes a challenge to most of my English language learners. My students lack this background knowledge which makes it difficult for them to create pathways to new content, thinking processes, and rich vocabulary. This becomes even a greater challenge when our classrooms have limited resources for science, social studies, art, physical education, and field trips. Through funding from DonorsChoose, I am able to provide the needed background knowledge to students with lively, hands-on experiences and activities that will open their world to new learning and add to their diverse lives.

My Project

This year I am stepping up our Projects Based Learning by joining a new teacher at our school who has started a photography club. We are co-teaching a STEAM club that will enable our students to use photography to incorporate the "A" (art) in STEM! Research shows that "creatives" shy away from the STEM career choices because they do not see themselves as math or science people. However, with our photography STEAM club, we aim to break that stereotype. We will be starting our last 6-week session in May, and we have 32 other students who are on the waitlist. Due to the limited amount of cameras, I have only accepted 19 students but I would like to expand the club and accept more students if I can get more cameras to have a smaller student-to-camera ratio. I would like to be able to show students the added features, manual focusing capabilities, and the improvement in photo quality when using SLR cameras for digital photography. The photography club members photograph their engineering and math process and progress. They will also work with other students to present the group's vision on their engineering and science projects. In addition, students will learn how to upload photographs onto the computer, use photo editing software, and create PowerPoint slideshows to exhibit their photographs. Please help us grow our photography club and incorporate the art in STEaM by funding 1 more camera.
