Our library is a K-12 library serving approximately 600 students. The staff is innovative with a strong desire to provide the most effective learning environment available to students.
Our student population consists of a high percentage of low-income families who have very little access to opportunities outside of school and our small town.
One of the great things about our school is that it has a great sense of community, thus our school is a hub for the community.
The library is where students come to discover the love of reading. Our staff strives for equity and celebrates diversity. Our library collection needs to have books that will grab the interest of all levels of readers.
My Project
The books I have chosen will be added to our collection and will give students the opportunity to read, recognize, and respect, ways of life that may be different than their own. These books are highly engaging, which will encourage students to read for enjoyment, learn about others, as well as see themselves in the characters.
As students read about diverse populations, the hope is that they will gain a feeling of empathy and compassion for those who may not look, dress, speak, or believe the same.
Reading about young adults going through the same problems, regardless of race, gender identity, or ethnicity helps students connect with diverse populations. I have put up displays of diverse books in our library and students have cleaned the shelves and asked for more.
As sophomores, they are required to read four different multicultural books and do in-depth book reviews for their Language Arts class. Having a wide variety of multicultural books to choose from in the library will help students find the needed resources to be successful in these academic classes.
