Our school is a neighborhood school serving approximately 800 students. Our students are from diverse backgrounds and speak a variety of languages. Our students are motivated to learn and look forward to coming to school every day. We also have a very experienced and loyal staff who care for our students and create a nurturing environment conducive to learning.
My students set goals for themselves and they achieve them.
They are smart, kind, and caring. They work hard as individuals and come together as a team. They enjoy learning about each other and from each other.
My Project
If you think back to your childhood, what sticks with you? For many people, it’s those times when they were listening to a story being read to them. What if you were unable to relate to or see yourself in those books? I am requesting these books to ensure that all of my students see themselves in our classroom library and feel validated.
We know that children’s books can act like both mirrors and windows on the world.
Mirrors in that they can reflect on children’s own lives, and windows in that they can give children a chance to learn about someone else’s life. We also know that this type of self-reflection and opportunity to read or hear about different lives is essential for children to feel as if they belong and to help develop empathy.
