Help me give my students a window into another world. My students live in an area with very little diversity. Books are one of their only portals to learn about other worlds, cultures, and traditions.
My learners love to read, explore, move, learn and discover every day. They love to learn about each other and learn about places in the world. They love to curl up with a good book and learn about another culture or discover a fascinating time in world history.
In my classroom, my fifth graders know they are in a safe place where they are encouraged to mess up and try again - a place where we encourage and lead with our hearts.
In West Des Moines, we focus on the process and remind ourselves the learning is not always about the end result. It is about the process. We celebrate our mistakes because it means we are learning. I love helping my learners become people who can collaborate, think critically and be problem solvers.
My Project
My students and I love learning about other cultures and one of the best ways we can do that is through literature! These picture books help us step into someone else's shoes and learn about life through their eyes. These experiences are incredibly valuable and are a necessary experience during the formative years!
All fifth-grade students will read and analyze each picture book to determine which book is most "distinguished" and deserves the coveted Caldecott award.
All fifth-grade students will then vote for the book they believe is most distinguished and deserving of the award.
From these books, students will be exposed to diverse viewpoints, cultures, and backgrounds from all around the world.
