Diversity Matters: Spotlighting Ourselves Through Books!
My students need books that represent them. My students need books that take them to a new world, give them new experiences, and allow them a window into other cultures.
I teach 22 amazing first graders. They are constantly questioning, learning, and discovering. They come into school everyday and cannot wait to learn as much as possible. My students come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, family configurations, learning styles, as well as different cultural and religious beliefs. I want to provide them with every opportunity to experience the world.
They are the future and we need to ensure that they are prepared to take on anything that comes their way.
They are the future and we need to ensure they are prepared to take on anything that comes their way.
My Project
I teach beyond tolerance. I encourage my students to learn as much as possible about everything they can. Books allow us to dive into worlds unknown, they open doors to countries we will never visit, and they teach us that there is more to than just outside our windows.
Who we are as individuals is part of who we have become as educators.
We have consciously or subconsciously weaved our biases and experiences into the classroom. As we reflect on our practices, we need to identify who we are, and how our core values impact our students.
"If we don’t give children books that are literary mirrors as well as windows to the whole world of possibility, if these books don’t give them the opportunity to see outside themselves, then how can we expect them to grow into adults who connect in meaningful ways to a global community, to people who might look or live differently than they. You cannot."
