Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a librarian in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of our students were directly affected by Hurricane Harvey, which left them devastated. Despite the many challenges they face, I am hoping to spread the love of reading and provide my students with exciting and relevant resources.
Our students love to read and thrive on positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk into the library, I focus on their potential and love of reading. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. I want the library to be a safe place where everyone feels welcome and accepted.
My Project
Our school is a beautiful melting pot of cultures. My goal is to give our students the opportunity to read about the different cultures that exist in our world. These diverse books will help our students learn about each other's cultures and traditions. My main focus, when choosing the books, was selecting biographies and historical fiction. By doing so, my wish is that they appreciate each other's differences, as well as, their similarities. The books in our library should reflect what our children see in the mirror. I want them to be able to relate to the people in the biographies, as well as, the characters in the stories. My library will be a place where everyone feels accepted and loved. After all, the library is the heart of the school.
