Support the underdog! I am a teacher in a high poverty school in the WSFCS School system. We are experiencing a time of transition and rebirth as a school. As a teacher, I will strive daily to help all students at our school achieve academic success. Reading is an integral part of this process.
Our students are bright, talented and energetic young people who live in high poverty.
Each student is excited and ready to come to school daily to learn despite the prevalence of high poverty within the community. However, many of these students lack the extra instructional time at home required to achieve their full academic potential. This is not because the parents do not care for their children, but because these busy, working parents are doing everything in their power to meet the daily needs of food, love and shelter for their children. Therefore, I appeal to you to be a part of the "village" it takes to raise a happy, healthy, lifelong learner.
I want to challenge and encourage my students to have a hunger for knowledge throughout their lives. What better way than to offer a library full of literature with characters they can identify with which celebrate and reflect our school culture? Further, the phonics manipulatives and centers will strengthen reading skills and propel them towards fluency in reading. We will use the manipulatives to strengthen phonics skills and the books to entice readers to have an innate desire to become fluent readers.
Reading is the gateway to success in all subjects whether it be Math, Social Studies or Science.
Furthermore, students who enjoy reading and are excited about reading are sure to be lifelong learners. I am proud to be at our school serving each student as a teacher, mentor, role model and caregiver. Will you please consider being a part of the exciting year of transition at our school and donate the requested reading materials? Thank you for your support and time!
