Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students deserve a 21st-century education that allows them to not only absorb content but to apply what they have learned in meaningful real-world experiences. Four years ago, a group of teachers decided to provide students with hands-on ownership of their learning. This was a major pedagogical shift that allowed our students to utilize project-based learning as an outlet for deeper, more relevant learning.
Our students live in a beautiful rural community that values STEM and project-based learning.
Students need to be prepared for high school as well as college and career. Allowing them a global understanding will better open opportunities for themselves and their community. This drive to give students every opportunity possible is a mission and a vision of this school district.
My Project
Every year we plan Science Night for all of our students. This year our theme is "Diversity in STEM". All students will be invited to an evening of amazing science as we celebrate the contribution of women and minorities.
We will have several hands-on engaging activities that students will get to participate in and lead.
We need clay for our STEM card challenge activity. Students will be given a short biography of a STEM pioneer and students will have to create something similar to what the scientist contributed to the field using clay and other maker space items. This is where literacy and hands-on science connect.
We need art supplies for decorating LED cards that our Femineer leaders will be teaching as a make and take activity. They will also be running our alternative energy activity where students look at the different forms of energy and build cars that run on wind and solar. This should be an empowering evening for our students.
