Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent black, five percent Asian and three percent white, with over 85% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.
I have students who come to school with so little and students coming to school without breakfast and without backpacks.
Some cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the educational opportunities they deserve.
My Project
There is such a wide variety of information and topics that can be found under the umbrella of STEM. From food science to engineering to video games and forensics, all of these topics can find a point of intersection in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The challenging part is showing students that there is all of these topics, that they have so much interest in, relate back to ideas they can learn about in the classroom.
Students are more willing to read and explore STEM fields on their own when there are books available that are engaging and geared towards their interests.
If we can expand our new library of non-fiction science books, then we can open the doors to whole new worlds of content and ideas. These books in particular will help reach topics that we have not been able to cover previously, and provide books for our stronger and weaker readers. Through those books we can inspire students to look outside of what is taught in the classroom to see everything that STEM has to offer, from video games to animal behavior to food science. We are also asking for books that will help students understand how these fields can translate to college and careers, and how to pursue these interests outside of high school. Using these books, we can foster the next generation of scientists and engineers of color who found their start from picking up a book.
