My students are a diverse community of learners who have been working to improve their reading and writing. We have been using literature as mirrors, windows and doors into the world.
We are a fishing community that is now having to move into a new economy as the fishing industry is suffering and changing.
At the same time, our proximity to a major city has brought in a growing professional population. We serve an increasingly diverse community, ethnically, racially, linguistically, and economically.
We have been working on building a positive community in order to break down barriers between the diverse groups that make up our student body.
My Project
Books are windows, mirrors and doors for everyone and it is so important for students have these to see themselves and all the possibilities that exist in this world.
Literature needs to reflect our world.
We have diversity in our world and in our classrooms and now is a time to have that diversity in our literature. We need engaging, relevant books that reflect what our students experience and hear about everyday. In order for that to happen our books for reciprocal teaching and literature circles need to be updated. We need to have books that reflect every part of our society and open up students to the possibilities that exist in the world.
