My students need books available to them that show diversity in races and abilities. It is important that all of my students are represented in the literature of our classroom.
My 1st grade classroom is a place of challenge and discovery. Students spend this year learning the foundation of knowledge and skills they will need as they move forward for many years to come. My students are creative, clever, and spontaneous.
The students I am currently teaching live in a rural/suburban town in Virginia.
They are excited to explore new topics and expand their critical thinking. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.
This is my first full year teaching. I would love to have the resources to teach my students to their best ability.
My Project
I have students with varying abilities, races, and languages. Now I would like to make sure there are books in our library that represent them. It is very hard to enjoy literature when you do not believe it represents you or your culture.
We need diverse books!
I want my students to be able to read books that have characters that look like them. This not only includes race, but also in a child's ability. I also have some multilingual students in my classroom. I would love to have the opportunity to have those students bring home books that their parents can read to them in their native language.
My students read and consume so many books in just one reading unit. I would love to include these books in my library for students to choose from.
