Our school is a Title 1 school. My students are ethnically and economically diverse. I have both ESL and homeless students in my classroom. My classroom and our school is a beautiful melting pot of students and families that come from very diverse backgrounds and situations, just like our nation as a whole. We are a small town with an urban feel. This is a big reason why our school and my class is so special because we have so many cultures, perspectives, and experiences that students and families bring with them on a daily basis.
My Project
Students read everyday in my classroom. They are allowed to shop in our classroom library and pick books that look interesting to them and that they would enjoy reading. They keep these books in their book bins for several days until they get the choice to switch them out again. Students love picking out books and reading independently. Many days they even ask me if they can have private reading time.
Part of being a first grade teacher is helping my students develop a deep desire and love for reading while they are in my classroom.
Most of my library books have main characters that are mostly caucasian or animals characters. I want students to have the opportunity to read books about characters who look like my students, have similar backgrounds, and have similar cultures as my students. This way my students can easily relate to the books they are reading. This is essential when fostering a love for reading in students.
